As an internationally-known fine-art photographer, I’ve spent 15 years hanging out of helicopters, kayaking storm swells, and trekking through blizzards all in the name of getting the shot. The kind of images I love to create don’t come easy. To get them, I’ve embedded with armed anti-poaching rangers patrolling Tsavo National Park in Kenya, skied icy alpine chutes with avalanche bombers in the Coast Mountains, and documented the plight of locals living in the Brazilian Amazon. I bring that same passion to my advertising work for iconic brands and creative agencies worldwide. Whether I’m heading up a large-scale advertising production or shooting a far- flung fine-art project, I’m driven by a relentless need to capture images that inspire. If my kids like them, then even better!
APPROACH
How I achieve that goal may vary from shoot to shoot, but my motivation is always the same: To create visually distinct images that not only get it right technically, but also hit you in the gut emotionally. I believe there is an inherent truth in discovered moments. That the best images are both honest and believable. The trick is to create an environment where those moments can consistently be found. Doing so requires a balancing act between meticulous planning and attention to detail, and a willingness to take risks, improvise and let scenes unfold naturally. Plus, one hell of a good team! That includes creative teams and clients. You know brand authenticity better than anyone, so feedback on set is welcomed with open arms. I can’t count the number of times the nudge of a creative director or the suggestion of a client has created a better final image.
